Jaffar Agha-Jaffar

Jaffar has more than 25 years experience in international payment systems arena. During this period he has managed an array of activities: from card-issuing, merchant-acquiring and traveler-check programs, through third-party processing center activities, to managing Card Tech Limited, a payment system solution provider.

In the early 1980s, Jaffar established a successful and innovative Visa card issuing and acquiring operation in the Middle East, which expanded into a third-party processing facility for BankAmerica in Egypt, plus many other banks in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, the Arabian Gulf, and Sudan. The Visa operation also provided traveler’s checks and travel-voucher issuing services. During that period he was appointed as an advisor of Visa International.

In 1989 he founded Card Tech Limited, providing bankcard solutions to financial institutions worldwide. The company was formed to address gaps in the market, which has been its mainstay. Initially, the key gap was the provision of the appropriate mix of licensing and processing solutions to the new issuing and acquiring entrants into the market place. Packages such as Visa START, PACC, American Express’ AXCES and JCB’s JAMES/JIPS have been developed under his stewardship. The company pioneered payment systems in Central and Eastern Europe, and has grown to provide sophisticated, high volume, open solutions for all segments of the worldwide market.

Jaffar holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from University College London and a master’s degree in architecture from London University.
