Tips for Completing Online Sales

On average, 69 percent of all visitors to e-commerce websites abandon their shopping carts before completing their purchase, according to a Baymard Institute usability study. It notes that a large portion of abandonment issues are user related and largely unavoidable (i.e. shoppers are "just browsing", comparing prices or saving items for later).

However, as an experienced online payment processor, TSYS Merchant SolutionsSM knows there are steps e-commerce merchants can take to help cut their shopping cart abandonment rate and complete more sales. One of the most important is to place a premium on security. It's something your customers expect, and it can help protect them and your business from the serious consequences of a data breach.

  • Make site security a top priority. The merchandise you offer is important, but today's online shoppers are looking for more — namely, an "s" in the "http" in your URL. They know that "s" stands for secure SSL encryption, and that it means you take seriously the protection of their personal and credit card information from data breach and identity theft. Put yourself in their shoes — don’t you expect the highest level of secure credit card processing when your own sensitive data is at stake?
  • Always ask for the CVC. The Card Verification Code is a security feature that offers you and your customers an added layer of protection from credit card fraud in a card-not-present (CNP) situation. It's the three- or four-digit number printed on the back of the card that can cut your risk of falling victim to a fraudster using a stolen credit card number on your site. Unless the customer has the card in their possession, it's unlikely that they'll be able to provide the CVC (which, depending on the card brand, is also referred to as CCV, CVV, CVD, CVVC and V-Code).
  • Comply with industry standards for all credit card processing. This is known as being compliant with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, or PCI compliant. There is just no substitute for this. As a reputable processor, TSYS Merchant Solutions works with all of its clients to help achieve and maintain compliance.
  • Toot your security horn. Don't just put these security measures in place — make sure your customers know about them! Promote in writing on your site the proactive stance you've taken against fraudsters and thieves. Feature security information prominently on every page, but especially on your secure payment page. This will encourage customers to continue through the checkout process to completion.
  • In addition to being secure, checkout should be easy and quick. This is where TSYS Hosted PaymentSM can really pay off. Sensitive cardholder data is not entered, transmitted or stored on your site, reducing your data security risks and compliance requirements. As an added bonus, all automated compliance and required industry updates are made on the TSYS server without impacting your technical resources.
