Payment Gateways

If you’re taking your business online – and most businesses these days either have or are in the process – then there’s a need for a payment gateway in order to process credit card and debit card transactions.

Payment gateways enable online transactions by linking to a website for customers’ payment accounts. This not only delivers fast authorizations transactions anywhere in the world, it also ensures that sensitive cardholder information is encrypted and passed securely from the customer to the merchant and from the merchant to your gateway provider or processor.

For many years, gateways and shopping cart solutions have been provided from unique gateway vendors, but more recently many payment processors have come to offer them as well, either as a “resell” from a gateway vendor, or as a proprietary service developed by the processing company.

How do you know if you need a gateway, and how do you find one that’s best for you?

  • Speed: A payment gateway is much faster than manual processing, and customers can make a purchase without the inconvenience of long waits or lines. Gateways also eliminate the need for a customer to jump between your site and a third-party site to perform a transaction (which is one of the most common reasons for cart abandonment).  For frictionless customer purchasing experiences, gateways are your best bet.
  • Security: Online fraud is prevalent, and your gateway should deliver the highest levels of protection. Your gateway should use multiple layers of encryption and tokenization, which translate transaction information into a highly secure code. PCI Level 1 compliance is also your assurance that your online shopping meets the highest standards of industry regulations.
  • Integration: Look for providers of solutions that are easy to integrate, typically via a simple but powerful API that web developers can incorporate into your site. The right API will allow you to customize a payment formthat works well with your website’s look and feel, giving your customers the added sense of security and convenience.  And, of course, your gateway must connect to your bank and/or processor to ensure that you receive your payments in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Features: Ultimately, you’ll want to make a decision based on the gateway features that are most important to you. Is your gateway equipped to handle multiple user accounts and recurring transactions?  Does it have a “remember me” option, allowing customers to have their data remembered and their future purchases made with just one click. Will it work quickly and safely from customer smart phones? How simple is it to process refunds?  Does the reporting make sense?
  • Support: None of this will matter if your gateway is not supported by accessible, available and informed individuals who can address your needs or issues as they occur.

Having the right gateway means you are open for business 24/7, and your customers can shop at any hour of the day or night from the comfort of their own homes.  You enable shopping from around the world, expanding your customer base exponentially.

Bundled with the right shopping cart, your customers can find it easy to select products with the click of a mouse, add them to the shopping cart, and complete the purchase with the cost of the items, sales tax, and shipping charges all calculated automatically.
