What makes a successful retailer?

To learn more about what differentiates a successful retailer, we turned to Nicole Becker at long-standing, home improvement chain, Valu Home Center out of Buffalo, NY. “Valu Home Center opened in 1968. We currently have 41 stores and almost 900 employees. Even our newest locations have been open for at least 15 years now,” explained Nicole. “Our stores are located in neighborhoods and our clients have always been loyal because our employees are well trained and pride themselves on great customer service.”

This type of experience is very unique because most retailers have much higher turnover than Valu Home Center. “Most managers have been with us for 20 years or more. We even have an office manager who’s been here for 42 years.” This level of experience facilitates much better training for less-tenured assistant and floor managers, which is incredibly hard to duplicate.

Community is key.

Another factor for retail success is community involvement. Not only is it a great way to help a charitable organization and boost employee morale, but it can also help increase visibility to your brand.
