"Excited, thankful and really shocked," was how Jose R. Guerrero reacted when he learned that he was the top scholar from the TSYS Future Scholars Foundation.

Guerrero, 18, won the Richard W. Ussery Scholarship at TSYS, named after the company's former chairman and CEO.

Started in 2008, the scholarship program at TSYS benefits college students of company team members. This year, the foundation awarded $126,000 in scholarships to 42 deserving college students for the 2019-2020 school year.

Guerrero is a 2019 graduate of Harris County High School in Hamilton, Georgia. He was salutatorian of his class and finished with a 4.0 GPA. He also played on the varsity soccer team and was a member of organizations such as the United Way Youth Council, Chick-fil-A Leadership Academy, National Honor Society, National English Honor Society and Science National Honor Society.

Born in Mexico, Guerrero moved to the United States when he was five and is now a U.S. citizen. He plans on attending Yale University where he will major in ethics, politics and economics. He hopes to attend law school and ultimately become an attorney who practices immigration law.

"My future career goals are to use my privilege as a U.S. citizen to help others achieve their American Dream," he said.

The TSYS Future Scholars program represents our company's commitment to supporting higher education through a scholarship program for the children of TSYS team members. Guerrero's mother, Fabiola Razo-Ibarra, works at the Philip W. Tomlinson Customer Service Center in Columbus.

Since 2008, the TSYS Future Scholars Foundation has awarded 646 scholarships totaling $1,183,750. Money is raised through the contributions of TSYS team members and friends of TSYS. Special events, such as golf outings and bake sales, help generate funds for the foundation.

The scholarship program is designed to reward the well-rounded student who strives for high academic achievement, devotes time to worthwhile extracurricular activities and is involved in meaningful community service.

Netspend reaches out

The TSYS Future Scholars program is one of two scholarship opportunities at the TSYS family of companies. Netspend, TSYS' consumer solutions segment, operates a scholarship program through its Netspend Scholarship Foundation. The Netspend scholarship 'lifts up' adults in the community who aspire to pursue higher education.

Based in Austin, Texas, Netspend started the scholarship program for its customers in 2016. The program has grown rapidly since its inception. In 2019, the Netspend Scholarship Foundation awarded $298,200 in scholarships to 120 recipients.

The mission of Netspend's scholarship program is to grant tuition assistance to deserving Netspend customers. The program helps people pay for education to gain new skills needed to earn higher-income jobs. Netspend provides support for customers who are looking to attend vocational or trade schools, community colleges or university programs.

Since 2016, the Netspend Scholarship Foundation has awarded more than $660,000 in scholarships.

At TSYS, giving back is at the heart and soul of our culture and promoting education is a top priority. We are proud of our scholarship programs and salute all of our award winners.
