Sustainability Practices Flourish at TSYS

Corporate sustainability is more than just caring about the environment, although that's a big part of it. It's an approach to business that aims to create long-term stakeholder value through practices that focus on the social, environmental and economic responsibilities of a company.

In other words, sustainability is about people, the community, the environment and ethics. It's about giving back, being transparent, showing integrity and creating a business legacy that will last for generations to come.

"We take sustainability very seriously," says Chip Torbert, senior vice president, Corporate Real Estate, at TSYS. "Not only is it the right thing to do, but it’s good for business too. Our clients and investors ask about it."

Torbert oversees many of the sustainability practices and environmental programs at TSYS. From waste diversion and energy reduction to grassroots recycling programs and infrastructure design, we do our part to protect the planet and motivate team members to act responsibly.

TSYS' Sustainability Story

Eco-friendly offices

Companywide, TSYS recycles many materials, including carpet, cardboard and miscellaneous metals, but paper is by far the largest in volume. In 2018, we recycled 3.1 million pounds of paper.

We even created an in-house paper recycling program to ensure that sensitive material is collected and destroyed appropriately by team members. To do this, TSYS invested in necessary recycling equipment and facility upgrades.

Moreover, TSYS has a variety of recycling partners which helped us divert 80 percent of our U.S. waste and 100 percent of our UK waste away from landfills in 2018.

In many of the break rooms at TSYS you'll find bins for recycling aluminum cans, Styrofoam cups and plastic bottles. And signs throughout our corporate footprint read "Recycle, Reduce, Reuse," encouraging our people across the globe to contribute to sustainability.

At our location in Cyprus, Nicosia, team members took the initiative to start a green committee that focuses on environmental matters. The group has jettisoned plastic cups and cutlery, made the office plant friendly, organizes clean-up events at public places, and regularly publishes content on how one can contribute to a sustainable environment and lifestyle.

"The goal was and is to make our office eco-friendly and our team members sensitive to environmental matters," says Edith Kessler-Charalambous, vice president, TSYS PRIME Business Solutions.

The TSYS Kennesaw team gives back by cleaning up a local community center lawn.

Conserving energy worldwide

Around the globe, TSYS is dedicated to improving the environmental performance of our facilities. Just in the last three years, we've reduced energy consumption at our data centers by 10 percent. That represents roughly 1,900 tons of carbon emissions that were removed from the atmosphere.

In addition to monitoring how much energy we use, we also consider where our energy originates. In the United Kingdom, all of our energy comes from a mixture of wind, solar, hydro and biomass power. And we are in the process of extending this practice to our North America operations as well.

"Sustainability is the approach that puts people, the community and the environment at the core of everything we do," says Troy Woods, chairman, president and CEO of TSYS. "We want to continue making people – and our planet – a top priority."

To show our commitment to sustainability, Woods recently participated in the Business Roundtable CEO sustainability challenge, and is featured in a video on the subject.

Ethics and community focused

Besides preserving the environment, we have a strong track record when it comes to ethics and community. In 2018, TSYS was named to Ethisphere's World's Most Ethical Companies list. This is the sixth time in the last seven years that we have achieved this honor, which underscores our commitment to leading ethical business standards and practices.

TSYS was also named to The Civic 50 for 2018, recognizing us as one of the most community-minded companies in the United States. This is the fifth straight year TSYS has made The Civic 50.

As you can see, when it comes to corporate sustainability, we set the pace around the world. For more information on our sustainability practices, refer to our Corporate Responsibility page where you can read the TSYS Global Citizenship Report.
