TSYS Team Members Reflect on Our 35th Anniversary

As the longest-tenured team member at TSYS, Sherry Fredrick has many memories from nearly a half century (49 years) of service. Fredrick started with the organization before TSYS was even a company, back when it was just a fledgling credit card processing unit of a community bank, Columbus Bank & Trust (now Synovus).

"I have a lot of great memories of TSYS through the years," said Fredrick. "The company has been great to me and I am blessed to work here. I have made a lot of friends and many are like family to me."

One of Fredrick's favorite memories was moving into the Riverfront Campus in Columbus, Ga., in 1999. The sprawling TSYS headquarters on the Chattahoochee River was built on the former site of an old textile mill once operated by Fieldcrest Cannon. Fredrick said her mother and sister both worked at Fieldcrest during its heyday.

"This place is very special to me and to have that connection with my mother and sister makes it even more special," she said.

Fredrick was on hand recently for the unveiling of a historical marker recognizing TSYS as a global business leader, which coincided with the 35th anniversary of the company. Erected by the Georgia Historical Society (GHS), the historical marker spotlights and venerates TSYS for its business longevity, innovative technology and significant economic impact to Georgia and the world.

Frederick said she was honored to be a part of the ceremony as she participated in the reading of the historical marker.

For TSYS team members, shareholders, customers, partners and friends, the marker is more than just another signpost. It’s a symbol of decades of pioneering people, relentless growth, meaningful relationships, selfless community service and doing business the right way.

Officially incorporated in 1983, this year TSYS celebrates its 35th anniversary as a leader in payments. To celebrate the occasion we reached out to a handful of team members and asked them about their favorite TSYS memories. Read below to see what they had to say.

How long have you worked at TSYS? 27 years

What is one of your favorite TSYS memories? Children walking (or running!) through the aisles, trick-or-treating cube-to-cube at Halloween. I remember my own daughter, now 17 and a high school senior, as a toddler making her appearances as a Geisha girl and Tinker Bell. It was fun to see other team members' children each year and marvel as they got older (and bigger!).

What event in TSYS' history makes you the most proud? Building the Riverfront Campus. Moving here from the South Center, we unpacked boxes and got lost walking from building to building and we thought, "Wow! — this company has arrived!" The campus really made a statement. We could see the Mott House and the river from our windows, and being on the footprint of so much of the city’s history was not lost on us.

How long have you worked at TSYS? Seven years. However, my connection to TSYS goes back much further, as I worked for our former parent company Synovus for 26 years.

What is one of your favorite TSYS memories? I have loved every Team Appreciation Week we have ever done, but last year's 'All Stars' theme was the most fun one yet!

What makes you proud to work at TSYS? I feel a great sense of pride by TSYS being honored recently by the Georgia Historical Society because it's a tribute to the work so many people have done over the past 35 years. I am also proud of TSYS' commitment to the communities we serve as recognized by our multiple wins of the Ethisphere and Civic 50 awards.

What event in TSYS' history makes you the most proud? Building of the Riverfront campus. I was able to move in early. And it still gives me a sense of pride when I cross the bridge each day.

How long have you worked at TSYS? 14 years

What is one of your favorite TSYS memories? On a personal note, being selected for the President’s Circle Award and the visit to the TSYS office in Columbus and the dinner ceremony hosted by TSYS Executives. On the team front, going out with the team for a night out, getting to know new people, and interacting with them.

What makes you proud to work at TSYS? In my role, TSYS clients throw all kinds of challenges from the demand of delivering new-age technology solutions in a short period of time to delivering new and innovative solutions. I am proud to say that our teams at TSYS work together to meet our client’s demands.

What is one of your favorite TSYS memories? Former IT executive Tony Hodge's retirement this year. Having the opportunity to hear from him about his career, the history and trajectory of our business, as well as his passion for our company and our team members was inspiring.

What makes you proud to work at TSYS? As a leader on the Client Relations team in the Merchant segment for the past five years, I've enjoyed seeing the consistent positive performance of the team. They quietly and tirelessly execute the TSYS vision of an unparalleled client experience every day. Their dedication to each other and their clients makes me proud to be here. People like this are what makes TSYS special — both to our team members and our partners.

How long have you worked at TSYS? 11 years

What is one of your favorite TSYS memories? Wow, I have so many special memories! Each summer the Tempe Heart of TSYS committee runs a water drive for two weeks. In 2018, Tempe and Broomfield sites raised enough money combined to purchase 114,639 bottles of water for the nonprofit St. Vincent de Paul to distribute to homeless people in the Phoenix metropolitan area. I had the honor of presenting that gift on behalf of the Merchant segment. That is one of my favorites!

What makes you proud to work at TSYS? I am proud to work at TSYS because we are the kind of company that encourages its employees to make their communities a better place to live! I used to do volunteer work on my own, now I do it on a regular basis with 300+ of my closest friends!

What is one of your favorite TSYS memories? Working in the Omaha office, I watched the tower being built. Before it was completed, we were able to ride up the elevator on the outside of the building and have lunch on the 30th floor. The walls weren't even up yet! When the building was completed, we were able to bring our families to tour the building. My father, husband and daughter were able to see the inside of this beautiful building.

What makes you proud to work at TSYS? Every time we have new hires or visitors from another location come to visit, we are always told that everyone is always smiling and seems happy here. We are a big family, with lots of cogs, but we all get along and have a good time.

What is one of your favorite TSYS memories? We've been building our machine learning model in the risk and fraud space, which has been a great journey from seeing something go from product concept stage to a full-fledged solution that has come with some great memories. The collaboration between several groups from across the globe, combined with working with one of our partners in developing this product, has been an amazing demonstration of teamwork. We have developed a capability for our clients that is helping them get protection from increasingly sophisticated fraud attacks. Bringing together business, product, technical, infrastructure, risk and fraud expertise is an example of how you can build some great innovation together and enjoy it.

What makes you proud to work at TSYS? Four years ago I started on a journey to help build our consultancy function. We brought together some of our SMEs from across the business with a mandate to help our clients with the products and capabilities we provide them. The function we created was something we felt we needed to do to help our clients, but what has been amazing has been the team members who have been committed to the vision. Our clients have embraced us and allowed us to help shape new ideas and concepts they are looking to take to market due to the trust we have built with them and our knowledge of the payment space.

How long have you worked at TSYS? 20 years

What is one of your favorite TSYS memories? It was way back within my first two or three years here, back when 'fun' was a goal. We had a team meeting at the Trade Center (in Columbus, Ga.). At the end of the meeting, we were shown a video starring Phil Tomlinson and Rick Ussery. The video ended with them driving away in a classic convertible, and then they drove that convertible onto the stage at our meeting. I was impressed. Not only had we been informed about where the company was and was headed, we had fun.

What event in TSYS' history makes you the most proud? I can't remember the years, but it was those in which TSYS was voted Best Place to Work.
